neuropsychological assessment
A neuropsychological assessment measures a comprehensive range of cognitive domains, including intellect, attention and concentration, memory and learning, problem solving, and academic function. Most assessments take between 3 – 4 hours, and children are generally seen over two or more sessions. The assessment process begins with a clinical interview, which is followed by formal testing. Feedback is typically provided in the week following the assessment process. You will then be provided with a report, which is also forwarded to the person who referred your child for the assessment; usually this is a medical practitioner or specialist.
Young people undergo neuropsychological assessments for a variety of different reasons. The assessment may assist with clarifying an underlying diagnosis, characterising a child’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses, or assisting with the process of accessing support and services, such as classroom assistance and NDIS supports.
Neuropsychological assessments are not subsidised by Medicare. Your private health insurance extras cover (if applicable) may rebate a small portion of the assessment costs. For assessment fees, please contact Silvana directly.
It is not uncommon for children who have cognitive difficulties to also experience a range of emotional or psychological concerns. These might include worry, anxiety, anger, and depression.
Silvana uses a variety of evidence-based therapeutic approaches, modified to be developmentally appropriate for children. Her therapy work integrates an understanding of neurobiology and how the brain underlies our relationships with one another and the world around us to shape who we are. In working with children, Silvana’s approach is kind, respectful, and individualised. She works creatively with children so that they can thrive (not just survive), despite the challenges they may be facing. Silvana understands that having a good working relationship with both children and families is essential to her therapeutic work.
Silvana is a registered provider of Medicare psychology services, which means that you can receive Medicare rebates under the Better Access initiative, if applicable.
psychological therapy - children
psychological therapy - parents and families
Parents and families may require their own psychological care. Silvana delivers therapy sessions for parents who present with a wide range of concerns. Parents who see Silvana may be feeling overwhelmed by the pressures within their family unit; they may want to understand, at a deeper level, what it means to connect with their children, or to establish a more consistent approach to their parenting.
Silvana supports parents towards a deeper understanding of and connection with their children, and a fuller understanding of themselves as parents. Her therapeutic approach draws heavily on the integration of neurobiological and interpersonal science and is informed by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. She aims to support parents to flourish and to achieve a rich, meaningful and values-based life.
Parents are able to claim Medicare rebates for therapy sessions as long as they are referred under their own GP Mental Health Treatment Plan.
